Sunny Delft

Text written in: English

This morning we woke up to blue skies and the sun shining.  What a nice change from all the wind and rain we have had for about the past week.

We decided to check out Delft, home of Delft blue pottery.  (I hadn't heard of it until I started reading about Holland, but it is quite famous.)  It was about an hour train ride and along the way we passed through Leiden, a town known for growing tulips.  It is a little early for tulips, but the daffodil fields are full of yellow blooms.  There were even a few swaths of white and purple.  In about a month Leiden's fields should be very full of color.  Today was market day in Delft, so the square in front of the New Church (built in the late 1400s) was full of vendors selling meat, cheese, veggies, clothing, fabric, flowers, really anything you might need.  But, no men's sunglasses.  Kyle needed some since the sun was so bright, and we finally foud some stylish shades at a pharmacy.  The company is celebrating their 75th anniversary, so we got a little bage to fill with candy in celebration!  How exciting, except that norther Europeans are very fond of black licorice, and I mean the most flavorful black licorice you can find.  I thought I was playing it safe by going for the brown colored gummi things, but they were evey more flavorful (disgusting is actualy the work I used before trying to get Kyle to eat one) than the black candies.

It was a nice day, so we went to the botanical gardens on the grounds of the technical university.  It was nice, but a little early for spring plants.  Their tropical green house was neat.  We also checked out the Army museum.  I think I might be done with military museums for a very long time.  Kyle really, really liked the museum.  It was a good museum, but two military museums in two days is a bit much for someone who isn't as interested.

We did a good job of fitting into cafe society.  Off of the main square was a smaller square filled with tables and chairs tha tall the cafes served.  We were even so smart to move our table into the remaining sun as it set behind a church steeple.

Back in Amsterdam we walked home so we could swing by the grocery store.  Their toilet paper packages have handles on them.  Super cool when you have to walk home half a mile carrying your toilet paper along with your other groceries!
